The New Soul in The New South Africa

“I was thinkin' 'bout Alicia Keys, …”

Yeah, you an’ me both, Bob.

I was a fan of her debut disc long before this song ever hit #1 on Billboard (for six weeks), and won Song of The Year, R&B Song of the Year, and Best Female Vocal Performance at the Grammy’s in 2002.

She wrote it, arranged it, produced it, and lived it.

And to think . . . she's the same age, to the month, as Christina Aguilera, and delivered this performance in South Africa the same week Aguilera lip-synched her new Bionic Bullshit on MTV — and BLAM!  There's the contrast between talent with soul, and talent with pimps.

A New Voice

Nothing is Aretha — but this sure is close. Sometimes so much so, you think it’s an imitation — but it’s an evolution. She is “of” it for sure, and has the single-minded vision of a natural diva, refusing to record until she could control the shots. And gawd bless him, Clive Davis saved the day again. Unlike Whitney Houston, another of his signings, Alicia has not distracted, detracted, regressed or got arrested — but has continued to stretch through the ever-expanding musical universe, whether dueting with Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium or Stevie Wonder at Obama’s Inauguration.

And here’s the little piano player from Hell’s Kitchen, one of the only Americans on the stage at the giant Kick-off Celebration Concert at the World Cup — and she’s representin’ world class.

For the cinematic-minded, enjoy the bass thrumming foreground shot with the singer grandly in the background, 2:072:13.  Never seen that before.

This gumbo's about a hundred different kinds of tasty.
