"Ruby" is a song by English rock band Kaiser Chiefs and is the lead track on their second album, Yours Truly, Angry Mob. It was released as the lead single from that album in the United Kingdom as a download on February 5, 2007 and as a limited edition 7 in and CD single on February 19 that year. It became the band's first ever #1 single on February 25, 2007, and ended 2007 as the year's 10th biggest-selling single in the UK with total sales of 313,765.[1]

A video single of the song was released in the United States at Best Buy stores on March 13, 2007, two weeks before the album was released there, and featured a live version of "Everything Is Average Nowadays" and the B-side "Admire You" (released on the UK 7" version).[2] The song is featured as a bonus track in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, is featured in Project Gotham Racing 4, in SingStar vol. 2 for the PlayStation 3 and as a song in Lego Rock Band. It also appears in PES 2010.

Music video

The promo for "Ruby" was directed by Swedish production company Stylewar, who also produced the 2005 video for "I Predict a Riot", and features the band performing in a desert landscape whilst a CGI metropolis-like miniature city builds around them. The video was scheduled to be shown on Channel 4 at 11:35pm on January 15, but was pulled from the schedules for unknown reasons. The video finally premiered on the official Kaiser Chiefs website four days later.

Ruby was prominently featured in the first episode of the ITV fantasy drama Demons. It was played during a scene in which the main character, Luke Van Helsing searches for his girlfriend, who is named Ruby.

When Rotherham United player Reuben Reid scores the song is played over the stadium PA system.

As the band are Leeds United season ticket holders, the song is often heard on the terraces of Elland Road. "Ruby" is frequently replaced with "Rui" (United defender Rui Marques). Six other football clubs are noted for their use of the song:

  • Celtic - Shuna, Shuna, Shuna Suke! Shunsuke Nakamura
  • Fulham - Bouiee, Bouiee, Bouiee, Bouiee Hameur Bouazza
  • Manchester United - Rooney, Rooney, Rooney, Rooney Wayne Rooney
  • Southampton - Rudi, Rudi, Rudi, Rudi Rudi Skacel
  • Doncaster Rovers - Donny Donny Donny Donny Doncaster
  • Everton - Louis, Louis, Loius, Saha! Louis Saha
  • Chelsea - David Luiz, Luiz, Luiz! David Luiz

The Rovers version of the song was sung at the Football League Trophy final of 2007, grabbing the attention of lead singer Ricky Wilson on The Chris Moyles Show on BBC Radio 1.

This song was played at the end of the NFL's New York Giants playoff game vs the Philadelphia Eagles. Once it was clear that the Giants were not going to win, the lyrics "could it be, could it be, that you're joking with me. And you don't really see you and me?" signified the end of the Giant's run in the playoffs.
