Can I get witness?

The Blind Boys of Alabama first formed in 1939. Yeah, before World War II.  But they really date back to before The Civil War.  Or maybe the Peloponnesian War.

This is eternal music. Songs that have survived by the oral tradition.  Songs so good they don’t need instruments.  Except for the one that God gave us all.

Some say that all music is spiritual — and when you experience this you know where it all comes from. And yes — you experience this music, you don’t just hear it.  The repeating chanting refrain becomes a heartbeat — steady and internal.  Three simple words, with the downbeat on “Free.”

Richie Havens channeled “Freedom” at Woodstock.  Nelson Mandela sat in jail for freedom.  Civil rights marchers were known as Freedom Riders.  And there was something of a revolution 'round these parts that started with a Declaration of Independence.  Freedom is what we’re all looking for.  And sometimes it takes a blind man to help us see.
