Rock Lives! Or at least it did in the spring of 2009. Randy Bachman muscled his way through at CMW’s Industry Awards with Classic Rock anthem “Takin’ Care Of Business,” Driven by a riff that still won’t quit, Randy truly worked overtime to wow the crowd. Never a charismatic figure on stage - unlike other rock-gods from his heyday – Bachman nevertheless did his best to get the audience going, and they responded as rowdy and raucous as any polite Canadian Radio or TV executive sitting with the boss at a banquet table could get: hands in the air, singing along; if anybody still smoked they would have been waving lighters.

Randy’s whole set was Glory Days revisited, from a time when Rock Music had a backbeat that kids could dance to. Weird how his trebly guitar leads are very reminiscent of Chuck Berry; it’s easy to forget how much Chuck informs the sound of Rock and Roll, even into the mid-seventies. Randy was joined on stage by the evening’s host, Lawrence Gowan, who contributed backing vocals and cowbell. More Cowbell!

Randy Bachman is a giant in Canadian Music, from before there was even a Canadian Music Industry. He has written some of the earliest, and some of the most iconic songs. Songs that virtually every Canadian knows: These Eyes, Laughing, American Woman, Blue Collar, Let It Ride. As a member of two cornerstone bands in Canadian Rock History, the Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, he’s had charting singles through the sixties, seventies and eighties, and performed for millions. He’s produced other iconic Canadian groups, like Trooper. Randy currently hosts the addictive Vinyl Tap, on CBC Radio.
