Makes Me Wanna Pray You Make More Music Like This

This is the shit.

question is . . . Why doesn't she tap this soul–gospel vein more often?

That opening single-breath scat is what popular music is missing.

Form a gawdamn band already — like Janis — in fact, THIS band, work it up — and strike the freakin dancers — you can carry it, baby, don’t worry.

This is the music that voice was born to sing — and this band was born to swing . . .

Tower of Power backing towering Tina,
Polyrhythmic grooves backing a rockin’ Aretha,
and one blues brother layin down a pair of aces on the keys (playing the Steve Winwood parts from the album),

and dig how this huge band brings it down to just piano and vocals,
then to just drums and voices,
and then BAM back up into full Swing.

a little James, a little Ella,
and a whole lotta Etta.

She wrote the song — and what an arrangement!

And note that she & the band are bringin this energy and spirit in a TV studio, mid-day, playin to 150 Ellen fans.

And yeah, that's Traffic's "Glad" riff in the opening.

And dig how this sounds like spontaneous Baptist testifying, yet it's a precisely scripted sermon about finding your savior — in whatever form.

For more music like this click on Aguilera and check out her version of "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" from the Grammys.
