Like its two predecessors, this third volume of performances from English television's Old Grey Whistle Test is a primer on eclecticism, an overused term that is nonetheless appropriate here. Packed into a little more than two hours, these 28 clips represent virtually every style of popular music, profound and trivial alike, that was in vogue when the show made its early-'70s to mid-'80s run, including traditional and contemporary folk, singer-songwriters, rock (hard, classic, and progressive), blues, punk, and new wave, along with other, less easy to categorize sounds. Better yet, most of the performances are live (others have live vocals over a pre-recorded track), and some are exceptionally good. Fairport Convention, soldiering on well after the departures of singer Sandy Denny and guitarist Richard Thompson, display their considerable chops on the instrumental "Brilliancy Medley" (Thompson appears elsewhere on the DVD in a duet with then-wife Linda); blues guitarist Freddie King and his band are deep in the pocket on the aptly-named "Boogie Funk"; Janis Ian reminds us what a poignant, well-crafted song her hit "At Seventeen" was; and Public Image Limited, Johnny Rotten's post-Sex Pistols outfit, are surprisingly powerful and compelling, as is King Crimson, with founder Robert Fripp joined by guitarist Adrian Belew, drummer Bill Bruford, and bassist Tony Levin. Of course, the show's Brit-centric booking policy will leave some viewers wondering what bands like Japan, Orange Juice, and Half Man Half Biscuit did to deserve this kind of exposure, while others may applaud the producers' showcasing the borderline unlistenable Jesus and Mary Chain even as they reach for the fast forward button. But with the rest of the acts ranging from Johnny Winter and Jackson Browne to Joe Jackson, John Martyn, and the Jam (and that's just the J's), surely there's something here for everyone. The cheeky, often amusing voice-over commentary available for most songs is the best of the bonus features.

Notes:

No menu, chapter marks at beginning of each track.

I have no plans to post whole programmes from the series - I'm not interested in a lot of the stuff, like to keep individual artists on separate DVDs, I'm rubbish at menus etc and I do get occasional reception glitches (not on this torrent) which makes long programmes problematical for me. So I'll leave that for others.

I will stick up the odd gem like this, Karen O is one of the best frontwomen I've ever seen live and I love the new stuff.

Ok, what you get is, 2 seperate, great performances: 1 with band, 1 with Weller on acoustic quitar. Great songs, great audio & video quality, but...the first performance with the band has sooooo many quick video editing cuts that you end up just getting pissed off that you can't focus on ANYTHING... The guy who edited this great performance should be taken to the desert and shot in the head, or at least never get another gig again. It's like an eight year-old got behind the editing machine and just cut-cut-cut-cut-cut.... what an idiot! It's virtually un-watchable to me becuase I get so pissed off at the relentless quick-edits between close-ups of performers and shots of the audience... A complete waste...

The second performance is MUCH better from that standpoint. The first guy could learn alot from whom-ever edited this great performance. You actually get to focus on the performer- incredible - who would-of thought that that's what we're paying for...

If you can tolerate never focusing on anything in the first performance, get it... Like I say, great performances, great audio & video "quality"...

Tracklisting:
Description: [show]

This DVD is comprised of two BBC4 broadcasts of Emmylou Harris specials. They were last broadcast on 10/14/07 and 2/29/08, respectively. "From a Deeper Well" is a career retrospective, while "Emmylou Harris at the BBC" is a collection of seven live performances, from 1976 to 2006. While I'm not certain as to the broadcast dates of these shows, the fact that the second broadcast includes a 10/20/06 performance would suggest this to be a fairly recent capture. This video was received in bulk trade, and had originally been altered to a 4:3 aspect ratio during its recording. TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 was used to reset the video to its intended 16:9 ratio, to crop out a small piece of advertisement between the two shows, and to replace and/or name chapter points that would create strategic breaks within the first part, and correctly identify the start of each song in the second.
